The hardest part for most of our fellow passengers was getting over the fact that only a small portion of these turtles would end up ever being released into the sea. Most were destined for soup pots.

Yes, now you can tell your friends that a weasel has been to Hell. It's a coral formation from hundreds of years ago that has now been exploited into a tourist trap. You can send a postcard marked from "Hell" here, and you can buy a "I've been to Hell and back" t-shirt at the neighboring shop.

Costa Maya is pretty much a pier with shopping and drinks, built exclusively for cruise ships.
|

Just down the road from the Costa Maya pier about two miles is the small fishing village of Mahajual. This is where we spent most of our day on the beach. The water here is so blue – it's just like one of those Corona commercials.

Puerta Maya is just the port in Cozumel where the ships tie up. There's shopping and lots of alcohol here, but not much more.
